Yachting World Review: Spinlock Impact knee pads Wearing protective clothing while sailing means waterproofs and gloves (at a push), yet the images of Ellen MacArthur wearing a crash helmet on board B&Q in 2005 probably surprised a few sailors around the world. Certainly for racing sailors, kneepads are not uncommon accessories, but cruisers also suffer moments of uncomfortable effort, straining to tighten, loosen or release some hard-to-reach line while changing tack in a hurry. According to Spinlock Design Director Chris Hill, the continual rolling of the kneecap under pressure during kneeling or bracing yourself can do lasting damage. The pads are adjustable so can be worn either over or under trousers. Tough fabric on the outers should prevent abrasion and a breathable backing should prevent a build-up of moisture inside the pad. Verdict: Popular with racers, but useful for cruisers too. Do yourself a favour and protect your joints.
